Thinking 0-027 ~ Gamification Introduction ~

Gamification - the process of incorporating game elements of engagement into real world tasks. Gamification is turning mundane work into engaging play, turning tedious chores into heroic adventures, and turning our greatest fears into our most rewarding quests.

To begin for those who aren’t too familiar with games and their underlying systems, here are a few common elements found in games that can be applied to the gamification process:

Levels - An indicator of how well you have been following your goals. A higher level often shows dedication, skillfulness, self improvement and growth. The higher the level, the better overall person you will be. Levels can also dictate which skills/abilities you are allowed access to.

Experience - Experience is rewarded for accomplishing tasks. It can be used to spend time leveling up skills (which in turn give you skill/ability experience), and also used towards leveling up, which allows you to unlock other special abilities (such as reducing the amount of exp it takes to do certain tasks).

Some examples for gaining experience -

Gain 100 exp if you can finish your essay in 3 days.

Gain 50 exp if you work on your homework assignment for 2 hours today.

Gain 10 exp for calling a friend and chatting for 15 minutes.

Gain 20 exp for eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner today.

Gain 30 exp for exercising for 30 minutes today.

Classes - We all have different personas, so why not try to focus on specific tasks?

The Artist - focusing on self improvement towards artistic goals

The Academic - focusing on self improvement towards academic goals

The Organizer - - focusing on self improvement towards organizational goals

The Socializer - - focusing on self improvement towards socializing goals

The Philosopher - focusing on self improvement towards themselves and their persona

Don’t like these? Make up your own persona.

Who do you want to be?

Who do you want to become?

Skills/Abilities - In the case of gamification, these skills and abilities are real life skills/abilities that we can train by spending time improving them.

Anything that can be measured through a progression of skill can be a skill or ability, and there are so many for us to master. Gamifying these skills/abilities will help us keep our motivation by rewarding us for doing what we want/need to learn, and reinforce our yearn for knowledge and self improvement.

A few skills could be -

- sports

- drawing

- writing

- learning a new language

Rewards -

Different levels of rewards. For example, You could have a quarter long goal to get 2 As, and if you do achieve such a task, then you get to do something extraordinary, like spend 500 dollars, do nothing productive for a week - whatever makes you especially happy.

Rewards are the end goals for gamifying your life. You set a goal (quest), for youself, then try your best to accomplish it. As you succeed along the way, you’ll receive small portions of experience to reinforce your success and hopefully will fulfill your ultimate goal. If you do, you’ll finish the quest and receive the reward you were hoping to obtain. What you want is your choosing and make sure it’s something you really want or value.

So in conclusion, Vita ludendus est ludus - Life is a game that must be played.

Let us make our game of life, then let us play it.
